Planning for the Summer and Fall

Pure-MichiganWe are about a month away from going on the road again so I thought I would talk a little about our plans and the general route we plan to take.  At this point, we can plan with some specificity the first two weeks of the trip.  We know our first destination to stay for more than a couple of days will be Effingham, IL.  We will visit my mother there and then head to Newmar in Indiana for some warranty work.  Our appointment date is August 1st but we don’t know how many days we will need to stay to have the work completed.  One couple reported on the iRV2 forum that they had expected to be there a week and it turned into 2 1/2 weeks because of unexpected problems.  I hope we can avoid that.  Once we finish there, we will head north to Michigan followed by our next commitment which is the Newmar International Rally in Pueblo, CO on September 22nd.  We figure that we have about 6 weeks to visit Michigan, and hopefully Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands on the way to Colorado.   We do want to focus on Michigan this part of the trip so we plan to spend most of that 6 weeks there.

Six weeks sounds like plenty of time to see and do whatever we want, but when you set down and start to plan you realize that there is more to see and do than is possible in the time you have.  So we decided to focus our effort on the Lake Michigan side of the state as we head north and then explore the Upper Peninsula before heading south toward Green Bay, WI.  Speaking of Wisconsin, we have heard that Door County is beautiful.  That is on our list too, time permitting.  This will be a challenge.

We used online resources from those online sites listed below and others to help us in the planning.

We also used information gleaned from different forums such as iRV2 and Escapees, and finally from some friends who spent time in Michigan last year.  Some of the places in the lower peninsula that have been suggested to us are:

Holland
Leelanau Peninsula
Old Mission Peninsula
Charlevoix and Petosky
Sleeping Bear Dunes
Harbor Springs
M 119 and the tree cover
Mackinaw City

In the Upper Peninsula:

St. Ignace
Mackinac Island
Locks at Sault Ste. Marie
Fayette Historic Town Site near Manistique
Tahquamenon Falls
Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum
Houghton and Copper Harbor

I’m not sure we will have time for everything, but if anyone reading this has any suggestions of how we should proceed on this trip or of places not on the list worth visiting, please comment or send us a message.  This is our first adventure into Michigan and we don’t want to overdo it, but at the same time, I’m not sure when we will be back so we want to make sure we see as much as possible.

We plan to find RV parks along the coast as we go north and just visit those sites within driving distance of where we are camped.  It looks like that will involve around six different locations up to Mackanac Island and then I’m not sure how many in the UP.  We won’t be able to make reservations as we won’t know our schedule till a few days before it happens so we may experience a little trouble finding camping the early part of August.  I anticipate things will open up more after Labor Day.

We’ll have more details about the UP and our Michigan trip as we get closer, and also our plans for heading to Mt. Rushmore and points west.

Safe Travels….
